I’ve always loved the idea of time capsules being dug up and brought to the surface. The things revealed in them bring remembrance, reignite passion and in a sense, awaken parts of our identity. Just like these time capsules, our hearts carry over things that we may have buried over a period of time. Although lost time can bring back the most pleasurable memories, it can also expose the concealed pain of our past. This past week at Unearthed we heard a message about Esther and what questions we need to ask ourselves when we’re unearthing truths in our lives. We were encouraged to keep trusting God as He prepares us for what’s next in our lives.

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. – Ezekiel 36:26 (NIV)

God promises to give us a new heart, but before He can do that He has to remove the old things in our hearts. The thing about these time capsules that makes them so significant is that they come with a designated time to be brought to the surface. I believe God is just as intentional in His timing when He surfaces the things in our hearts that have been hidden. When these hidden hurts, embedded emotions, and inner insecurities come to light, our immediate reaction is to hide them. We distract ourselves with the good things and eventually we don’t allow God to reveal His greatness. Those things can range from consuming ourselves in work, school, errands, routines, relationships and maybe even ministry.

We can find ourselves unsatisfied and overworked, with one question lingering in our minds, “Why am I going through this right now?” Miranda taught at our study this past week and showed us how to lean on Esther 4:14, “This is the moment for which you have been created.” You have been created to overcome unspoken battles. You can believe God wants to free you of memories and mindsets of your past. You have been created to surpass the stress of struggling with them. You have been created to redeem areas in your heart that have been stuck in time! Allow God to show you His greatness to you. Let Him dig and resurface everything in your time capsule that He can use to awaken a new identity in you!
